本人對歷史研究的興趣始於探討由常民發動之集體運動 (collective action)在整體歷史論述中的重要性，而我的終極關懷則在於想為歷史論述中的弱勢族群發聲。這樣的研究興趣將我帶領到地方史 (Local History)的研究脈絡中。

我主要的研究問題意識有二，首先：在地方社會的脈絡中，到底是什麼樣的動力可以讓一般人組織起來去跟更大的歷史變遷過程進行互動。復次，身為一個歷史家又可以如何透過結合地方文獻資料與田野研究去挑戰民族國家與菁英論述所主導建構的歷史解釋。

具體的研究方法是結合文獻與田野研究之「歷史人類學」方法，這也是受到「由下而上的歷史」(history from below)與「常民史」（ordinary people’s history ）之影響，並想用「由小見大」之視角，實現「微觀史」(micro-history)與「大歷史」（grand narratives）的對話。近年的研究，則將焦點轉向「地方的現代史」，希冀結合近日大量可資利用的多方檔案資料，並運用「地方的視角」去重新探討十九世紀以來的中國與東亞歷史。

我的研究空間從浙南往南走向整個東南沿海（包括台灣）; 就時間上，則是從二十世紀初走向冷戰，準備提出與回答的新問題是：地方社會是如何應對廿世紀以來現代國家對其傳統生活方式的挑戰？地方社會中的人群的日常政治又因此產生了哪些變化？透過對這些變化的重新理解，我們又可以怎樣去反思廿世紀史的研究。透過對東南沿海地方社會人群的研究，的具體問題是自從廿世紀以來在該地活動的海上人群的經濟生活基礎到底具體為何？這樣的跨國境的地方人群的經濟活動與政治決定，在進入廿世紀後，又產生了怎樣的變遷？

就研究方法的反思而言，我採用歷史人類學的研究方法。但與目前皆強調研究明清兩朝的地方社會的研究成果不同的是：本研究強調走向「現代」的歷史人類學研究，主要的核心理論問題是：所謂的現代，並不只是啟蒙菁英及現代民國國家單向進行「發明」所帶給地方社會的。若是回到地方與人的存在狀況等兩個重要脈絡去重新進行觀察，可以發現所謂的現代是透過不同世代的人群為了爭取更好的生活，從而結合了許多當下所可以掌握條件後所共同創造出來的。
