黃旨彥主要的研究關懷在於漢唐時期的⼈際關係與社交文化，其研究取徑強調從政治及社會制度發掘時⼈共享的⽂化價值觀，並進一步追求不同權力關係在性別與空間視角下所顯現的歷史意義。做為一位文化史研究者，筆者一方面視空間本身為權力關係的具象化，另一方面視空間為展示權力關係的舞台，因此重視歷史人物行動的展演性及其行為的觀看者。筆者同時是一位性別史研究者，視制度為個人在政治及社會結構中的錨準，因此主張必須在充分了解制度的前提下，進行男女身分認同及權力關係的研究。著有《公主政治：魏晉南北朝政治史的性別考察》(2013，稻鄉)、〈醜女在他鄉：佛教譬喻傳衍所見中國中古性別文化與社交實踐〉及 “Polygyny and Its Discontents: A Key to Understanding Traditional Chinese Society” 等中英論著。

筆者未來五年欲進行的研究計畫，包含將博士論文修改為專書之計畫，以及將目前手上的國科會計畫擴展為專書規模的成果。筆者預計仍以 “More Than Friends: Gender, Space, and Interpersonal Relations in Medieval China, 3rd–10th Centuries” 為名，將博士論文改寫為專書。此書旨在探討親密與信任的歷史，考察魏晉南北朝的菁英男性如何透過父親、母親及妻子的幫助，建構、維繫並象徵性地表明其最親近的人際關係，重點指出時人所認知的「親密關係」，實際上是一種僅存在於男性之間且具高度展演性質的人際關係，釐清此點，有助於我們重新思考中古的性別角色、親屬關係與情感連結。

筆者第二個研究計畫為「唐玄宗的行樂政治」，此計畫旨在探討唐玄宗 （r. 712-756）如何定義成功的統治者，並在制度上落實鼓勵百官尋歡訪勝的政策。本計畫特別指出玄宗政治理念的一個重要變革，即是視逸樂為太平的表現，這與過往儒家經典傾向將惡政與縱樂聯繫大異其趣。唐玄宗視逸樂為政權和平、穩定和繁榮的指標，甚至實施了一系列改革來實現其政治理念，諸如設定新的官⽅節假，或調整官員上朝及進辦公室處理事務的時間及頻率，以給予官員更多閒暇出遊。本計畫指出不少唐代君主與臣下競爭統治帝國的話語權，積極著書立說宣揚自己的政治理念。而與臣民同歡的太平理念，正是唐玄宗獨樹⼀幟的帝王學。此計畫奠基於情緒史、政治史與日常生活史，為八世紀的中國如何定義賢能的君王及有效的統治提供全新的解釋。
